S2010/1: Ian Breckon: Researching the Amelia Home
Narratives and the 1857 IndianThe aim is to do
archival research in the NAK, Delhi and NLK, Kolkata,
studying original documents and correspondence. This will
help in locating original documents relating to Amelia
Horne, a survivor of the 1857 Kanpur massacre.

S2010/2: Uprising. Sitara Thobani: The
Postcolonial Reconstruction of Odissi Classical Dance
The aim of the study is to undertake literature review,
archival research, interviews with key dancers and
performers in Orissa and participation in and observation of
dance training and performance by two choreographers.

study of Chacha Vrindabandas
The study proposes to develop knowledge of modern Hindi,
and examine the manuscripts relating to Chacha Vrindabandas.

Type 10: Project Mapping Early Historic Networks in South
Asia and Beyond
The study aims towards investigating the nature of
ancient communication networks through the analysis of a
single, but highly diagnostic, ceramic, Arikamedu Type 10.

The aim of the study is to document history of Tibetan
Buddhism in North East India, specifically Arunachal
Pradesh, and to understand development of Tibetan Buddhist
culture among indigenous communities

fieldwork-Intersections of Identity: Exploring the
Construction of Political Identity among Hijras in Madhya
Pradesh
The study aims towards undertaking the fieldwork in
Madhya Pradesh among hijras in politics, researching hijras’
participation, analyzing legal documents and newspapers not
available in UK.

S2010/7: Charles Jamyang Oliphant: Tracing Ayurvedic
influences on Tibetan medicine and longevity practices.
The aim of the research is to engage with the Indian and
Tibetan medical community, examine contemporary practice and
interview doctors and create audio-visual records of Tibetan
medical empowerment dances.

The research aims towards filming four young blind chess
players and a pioneering blind chess coach in their home
states, and film a major chess tournament for the blind

Tribes
The aim of the research is to develop a half-hour
programme of five short indigenous animation films with
young people in the North East of India, via extended
workshops.

S2010/10: Barbie Campbell Cole: Ornament,
Myth and Migration- Heirloom Beads of Arunachal
The research aims documenting migration myths
and legends relating to Arunachal’s heirloom beads, to
photograph the beads and assess implications for history,
migration and trade in the area.

S2010/11: Shaila Bhatti: Mumbai Wonders:
Restoring Empire’s Museums as Heritage, Culture and Identity
in India
To examine the renovation work carried out at the Dr Bhau
Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai and its socio-cultural impact on
the museum as an institution.

S2010/12: Amy Hannington: Preserving
Niyamgiri: an exploration of the fight to save a sacred
mountain in Orissa
The aim is to research the relationship the
Dongria Kondh of Orissa have with their sacred mountain,
Niyamgiri, and the relationship between their beliefs and
the campaign against mining company Vedanta mining the
mountain for bauxite.
