Haryana - Cultural Heritage Guide
This Guide to the cultural heritage of Haryana is
an important resource on the unprotected heritage of
Haryana. The first section of the guide provides an
overview of Haryana's natural, archaeological,
architectural and cultural resources with articles
that focus on the State's geographical
transformations, political history, cultural changes
and chronological evolution of architectural types.
The main section of the guide presents details of
each district, its history and indigenous
characteristics along with major heritage landmarks.
This section is heavily supported by maps and drawings
and serves as a useful reference for each district. The
heritage walks identified in the few select towns within
each district showcase the major heritage precincts that
are the only collective remains from the past besides
the numerous isolated monuments listed in this book.
The book is a first attempt at a chronological and
geographical mapping of Haryana's rich cultural
heritage.
Edited by Ms Shikha Jain and Ms Bhawna Dandona.
Researched by Mr R.L. Bawa.

Burra Bunglows and all that
The drinking of tea has become intimately bound over with the daily lives of millions of people in
India from the ubiquitous way-side tea shops to elaborate boutique tea parlours or tea bars. Numerous books have appeared about the history of tea, its planting, propagation, and production techniques, the wide range off different qualities of tea and the brewing of it in
India and abroad. Some of the industrial houses closely associated with tea have come out with full-scale histories, or with more popular publications and interesting and useful house magazines.
What INTACH Calcutta Chapter with the support of the Tea Board
India and the INTACH UK Trust has attempted in these pages is to provide glimpses as far as possible of the built heritage of the tea industry in Assam, from Managers' bungalows, offices, the plantations, factories and factory machinery, to clubs, churches and cemeteries that have became part and parcel of the history and heritage of the industry over the last century and a half.
Edited by G.M.Kapur, Heritage Conservation Activist and Convenor, INTACH.

Narratives of the Environment of Delhi
An environmental perspective of Delhi’s past is
difficult to come by. The reason appears to be that
in the past environment was not an issue and the
human footprint on the planet paled in front of
awesome nature. The absence of environmental issues
resulted in a corresponding absence of direct
references to environmental issues or any form of
dedicated environmental literature.
This exercise was initiated by the Natural Heritage
Division of INTACH with a view to cull out natural
characteristics of Delhi as referred to in archival
material and as recalled by senior citizens of Delhi who
have witnessed the loss and transformation of the
natural character of Delhi as the city rushes headlong
towards a steel and concrete modernity. Price (For members only)

Conservation Agriculture
Based on a 1998 INTACH report, which was the outcome of an elaborate study of the whole of the Khajuraho region. Discovery by an INTACH team of the existence (in a dilapidated condition) of several fruit and vegetable gardens founded in the 18th century. The author of this brief maintains that the agrarian value of these lost gardens, if revived, may be able to address both the problem of drought and unemployment in the region. Johan D'hulster makes a case for the revival and development of these 'lost gardens of Khajuraho' and links this necessary development with both the regional and worldwide developments in agriculture.
