Projects

The Division has worked so far on the following projects sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, GoI and Department of Tourism of the State Government:

Rural Tourism Project: The Division has prepared integrated development plans for potential heritage villages to promote rural tourism by restored village houses, like, Paragpur in Himachal Pradesh and promotion of arts and crafts of villages, like, Raghurajpur in Orissa, which has been promoted as a heritage village and was bestowed with the National Award by the Government of India during the year 2005-2006.

(a) Heritage Tourism Management Plan Project: The Division has prepared tourism plans with the following objectives of sustainable development of cultural sites of two villages (Malhar and Sirpur) of Chhattisgarh:

  • Conservation of cultural and natural resources,
  • Authentic interpretation of these resources,
  • Visitors’ experience and the stimulation of the earned revenues of cultural resources.

The Division proposed in the Sirpur report following site potentials for developing the site as a heritage tourism destination.

  1. Cultural Tourism

  2. Nature and Wildlife Tourism

  3. Recreational and Leisure Tourism

(b) Sustainable Tourism Development Plans for two North-east States - Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh - focus on opportunities (natural and manmade) participation (community and tourists) and sustainability (economic and environment) and take into account traditional festivals, crafts, performing arts, temples and other important old buildings, natural precincts, and local knowledge which needs to be spread out for the benefits of local community and others.

Tourism circuits are proposed by experts for development of tourism in these two States enable the visitors to have a useful experience. Cultural, Nature/Eco, Rural, Adventure, Wildlife and Forest, Leisure and Wellness Tourism are proposed in the product portfolio of both the plans.

Urban Renewal Mission Project – An idea behind the project is to evolve a strategy for development of heritage cities based on the concept of heritage. The INTACH Chapter (Madhya Pradesh) has prepared the City Development Plan (CDP) for Ujjain, which is based on heritage planning and a model for other cities. This was evaluated by CEPT.

Capacity Building - Ministry of Tourism provide grant to INTACH under the capacity building service providers scheme to enhance the knowledge and skills of regional guides for better interpretation of heritage sites to visitors. The Division has organized so far thematic lectures on the following subjects and developed training modules for these training programmes held in different cities of the country:

  • Buddhism and Buddhist Art and Architecture

  • Vijayanagara Art, Architecture and History

  • World Heritage sites in Delhi (Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb and Red Fort)
