Membership

INTACH is essentially an organization of volunteers who have an abiding and active interest in
the preservation and conservation of India's art and cultural heritage. Membership is important as it gives weight to INTACH's representation as an organization of first choice for preservation and conservation of our art and cultural heritage. One of the first concerns in the short term vision is to widen and strengthen INTACH's membership base and thereby involve a large number of people in addressing its core concerns. The representation must stretch across social strata and not remain only with the educated elite. It must involve the people's representatives, the decision makers and the implemented who impact the preservation and conservation of heritage, the students and youth of the country.

The criterion laid down for the establishment of a Chapter is to have a minimum of 25 members. In remote areas, this number could be 10 to begin with. However, the aim should be to increase the numbers and their range so that INTACH becomes truly a people's movement.

Membership Rules

Rule 18 (i) of the Rules and Regulations empowers the Executive Committee of INTACH to make decisions on applications for membership with a right to refuse membership without assigning reasons, and its decision shall be final. In exercising these functions, the Executive Committee of INTACH has constituted a Membership Committee whose main function is to scrutinize all membership applications and to ensure that the eligibility criteria laid down in the Rules and Regulations of the Society have been complied with. The Membership Committee has seven (7) members, of whom three are from amongst the members of the Executive Committee of INTACH, two (2) from amongst the State Conveners, the Head of the Chapters Division and the Member Secretary, INTACH. The Membership Committee shall be the authority empowered to approve granting of membership. However, membership as an Associate Member or Student Member (non-voting categories) may be granted by the Chapters Division and reported in the next meeting of the Membership Committee. An Associate Member will be entitled to be approved as an Ordinary Member (with voting rights) on the completion of two (2) years from his enrolment as an Associate Member. The Membership Committee will accord such approval on the recommendation of the convener of the Chapter concerned.

It must be re-emphasized that the membership of the society (INTACH) is indivisible and any person / institution accepted to the membership of the Society thus become a member of INTACH. It is only for the purposes of participating in the activities and programmes to achieve the vision and the objectives of the Society that they are enrolled as members of a Chapter of INTACH. It is of course true that Chapters constitute the foremost operational entity of the INTACH and its all-India reach is possible only through the Chapters. In the final analysis it is the strengths and weaknesses of the Chapters that determine how effective the Society/Trust is in achieving its vision and goals.
